Tashkent to Make Amir Temur Square More Pedestrian-Friendly

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Tashkent is implementing a project to improve the transport scheme around Amir Temur Square, aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety, improving traffic organization, and creating a more comfortable urban environment in one of the capital’s key public spaces.

The approach is based on the “city for pedestrians” principle, which provides for the development of a barrier-free environment, a reduction in conflict points between road users, and prioritization of safety for residents and visitors. The project takes into account integrated territorial development with the combination of vehicle flows, public transport, and pedestrian routes.

As part of the initiative, several key measures are planned. At the crossing section from the “Broadway” area to the square, metal barriers will be removed and a barrier-free space will be created with the installation of a smart traffic light system designed to ensure safe and priority pedestrian movement.

Special attention is given to the organization of safety islands. These will be installed at entry points from Makhtumkuli Street near the Forum Palace area, Amir Temur Street, and near the Temurids Museum. Intelligent traffic light systems will also be introduced at these locations to improve safety levels.

The project also includes the development of tourism infrastructure. To better regulate transport flows, designated parking areas for турист buses are planned near the Temurids Museum and the Uzbekistan Hotel, which is expected to reduce pressure on the road network.

The optimization of the traffic scheme is expected to increase the capacity of the ring junction from 5,600 to 6,000 vehicles per hour while simultaneously reducing the number of traffic conflict situations.

Overall, the project aims to create a safer, more convenient, and balanced urban space that takes into account the interests of both drivers and pedestrians, while also enhancing the tourism attractiveness of central Tashkent.
