Uzbekistan Steps Up Prevention of Meningococcal Infection
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Committee for Sanitary-Epidemiological Wellbeing and Public Health of Uzbekistan has reported on the current situation regarding meningococcal infection amid recent public inquiries. The agency emphasized that the situation remains under constant epidemiological control and is stable.
According to the committee, meningococcal infection is seasonal and, as in other countries, is most commonly recorded during the autumn-spring period, with an increase in cases in February and March. Preventive and sanitary-epidemiological measures are being implemented across the country to prevent the spread of the disease.
The committee stated that individuals who have been in contact with infected patients are covered by vaccination, and no cases of infection have been detected among them. Citizens with medical contraindications are under medical supervision and receive preventive medication support.
The agency also outlined the main symptoms of meningococcal infection, including high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, photophobia, weakness, seizures, and possible rash in bacterial forms of the disease. In children and infants, symptoms may include persistent crying, refusal to eat, drowsiness, or increased irritability.
Residents are advised to seek immediate medical attention if early symptoms appear. Preventive measures include maintaining personal hygiene, timely medical consultations, caution in crowded places, and vaccination, including before pilgrimage trips such as Hajj and Umrah.
The committee also noted that vaccination points are operating in all regions of the country and are supplied with necessary vaccines. Authorities urged the public not to panic and to rely only on official sources of information.
