Tashkent Explains Flooding Near Chorsu Metro Station
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Tashkent authorities have explained the causes of flooding near the entrance to the Chorsu metro station, which occurred on 3 May following heavy rainfall.
According to the city administration, water accumulation that blocked access to the station was caused by disruptions in the irrigation system.
Officials said the main cause of the incident was the unauthorized blocking of irrigation networks, which disrupted normal water drainage. As a result, rainwater could not be diverted in time, leading to localized flooding.
The administration noted that obstacles to the system’s operation included unauthorized structures such as parking areas, garages, and road surfaces. Previously, the infrastructure ensured effective drainage, but the situation has changed with increased urban development.
Authorities added that the existing drainage system was designed to handle up to 20 millimeters of rainfall per day. On the day of the incident, around 12 millimeters of rain fell within two hours, which under normal conditions would not have caused flooding. However, due to limitations in the irrigation system, the water was not properly drained.
The city has developed a new master plan to modernize the drainage system. It provides for increasing its capacity to handle up to 36 millimeters of rainfall per day, which is expected to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
Work is already underway at the site, with specialized equipment deployed to restore and expand existing irrigation networks. Additional drainage facilities are also planned to improve the resilience of urban infrastructure.
