Uzbekistan Reports 60 WWII Veterans Remaining
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — As of 6 May, Uzbekistan is home to 60 surviving veterans of World War II and individuals with equivalent status, the country’s Ministry of Defense said.
The group includes combat veterans, war invalids, as well as citizens who survived the siege of Leningrad and imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps.
According to the data, among the 60 individuals, 14 are disabled veterans of World War II, 14 are direct combat participants, 13 are survivors of the siege of Leningrad, and 19 are former prisoners of concentration camps.
The largest number of veterans lives in Tashkent, where 28 people are registered. Another 11 reside in the Tashkent region, and 5 in the Fergana region. The remaining veterans are distributed across other regions of the country in smaller numbers.
The Ministry of Defense also provided historical figures on Uzbekistan’s participation in the war. Based on revised military registration records, 1,951,000 people were mobilized from the republic to the front lines. At the time, Uzbekistan’s population was about 6.5 million. According to official statistics, 538,000 Uzbek citizens who went to the front were killed.
The ministry noted that social support measures continue to be provided to surviving veterans. Each World War II participant and disabled veteran is entitled to a one-time payment of 30 million Uzbek soums.
