Japan to Host ADB Annual Meeting in Nagoya

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Japan will host the 60th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Aichi-Nagoya from 2 to 5 May 2027, marking the bank’s 60th anniversary and symbolizing six decades of partnership since its founding in 1966, according to ADB.

ADB President Masato Kanda said holding the milestone meeting in Japan carries special significance given the country’s role as one of the bank’s founding members and largest shareholders. He said the event would serve not only to review past achievements but also to help define the region’s future development priorities.

A presentation of the upcoming host location, titled the Future Host Country Event, was held during the current ADB Annual Meeting in Samarkand.

It was attended by representatives of the Government of Japan, including Shuichi Hosoda, Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs, as well as officials from Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City. During the Samarkand meeting, Japan’s Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato also assumed the chairmanship of the ADB Board of Governors for the coming year.

The upcoming Aichi-Nagoya forum will be held under the theme “Strengthening Partnerships, Advancing Transformation.” Participants will discuss the region’s development progress over six decades of ADB operations and outline strategic priorities for the future.

The ADB Annual Meeting remains a key platform for discussing regional development policy. It brings together governors from member countries, finance ministers, central bank governors, representatives of international organizations, as well as business leaders, civil society, and media. The forum sets the bank’s administrative, financial, and operational direction.

Japan has traditionally played a leading role in the ADB. The country hosts the Annual Meeting once every ten years, beginning with the first event in Tokyo in 1966. The most recent meeting held in Japan took place in Yokohama in 2017. In addition to hosting responsibilities, Tokyo is one of the bank’s largest shareholders and a major contributor to its trust funds.

Among these financing mechanisms is the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, the ADB’s largest donor trust fund supporting poverty reduction and social development programs across the region.

Founded in 1966 and comprising 69 members, 50 of which are regional economies, the Asian Development Bank remains a leading multilateral development institution supporting inclusive and sustainable growth in Asia and the Pacific.
