Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Today, 4.5 million hectares of area are sown with onions in the world, and 85.795 million tons of products are grown, the average yield is 19.31 t/ha. In terms of production, the leading places are occupied by such countries as China, India, the USA, Iran. Onion is one of the main vegetable crops in these countries.

In Uzbekistan, the issues of creating new onion varieties suitable for growing with high yields and different maturity periods, using advanced technologies for growing from seeds, seedlings and cuttings are relevant.

Measures are being actively taken to launch the export of onions and increase the gross harvest in the republic.

In order to meet the needs of the population of the republic in onions, to establish price stability in the markets in 2022, all categories of farms will produce a total of 1 million 897 thousand tons of onions, of which 954.1 thousand tons are farms and agricultural enterprises and 943.2 thousand tons by dekhkan farms and household plots of the population.

For the harvest of 2022, farmers and agricultural enterprises in the regions sowed a total of 59.1 thousand hectares, of which in the spring - 22.5 thousand hectares, in August-September - 14.9 thousand hectares, and in November-December it is planned to sow another 21.7 thousand hectares using the “tucsonbosti” method.

Some areas are specialized in growing onions based on the soil and climatic conditions of the regions and water availability.

In particular, onions are planted in Akhangaron, Parkent, Bostonlyk, Tashkent districts of Tashkent region, Sharof Rashidov, Zamin districts of Jihak region, Jombay, Toylok, Samarkand districts of Samarkand region, Kitab, Shakhrisabz, Yakkabag districts of Kashkadarya region, Jarkurgan, Sariosiyo, Denau districts of Surkhandarya region.

Ravnak, Istikbol, Zafar, Ak-Dur and foreign varieties Manas, Daytona, Leone and Banko are grown for export in the republic.

For 7 months of 2022, 158,700 tons of onions worth US$22.4 million were exported to countries such as Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Latvia, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Oman.

In recent years, innovative resource-saving technologies have been used in the cultivation and care of these varieties, the yield is achieved by the high-quality implementation of such agrotechnical measures as planting high-yielding varieties, reducing the consumption of mineral fertilizers through the introduction of a sprinkling system, and timely treatment from diseases and pests.
