Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan agree on joint use of Chashma spring

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 24 April, Tashkent hosted a regular meeting between the delegations of the governments of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic on the delimitation and demarcation of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz state border.

The talks were chaired by Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan — Chairman of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev.

During the meeting, the parties approved the protocol on the proposed border line for the remaining unsettled section and outlined the key terms of an agreement on the joint use of the Chashma spring.

Both sides emphasized that the Chashma spring is a shared natural heritage of the peoples of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. An agreement was reached granting Uzbek citizens unrestricted access and the right to use two-thirds of the spring's water. Additionally, Kyrgyzstan agreed to coordinate any actions that could affect the spring’s water volume or quality with Uzbekistan.

The two parties also agreed to avoid any measures that could hinder full and peaceful use of the spring by both countries' citizens.

Furthermore, the sides coordinated efforts for the prompt signing of the agreement on the joint use of the Chashma spring and the treaty on the border section between the two countries.

They also discussed the current status and operations of several border checkpoints, emphasizing the importance of streamlining procedures to ease the movement of people and goods.

The need for a swift signing of the protocol amending the 2004 agreement on the state border and border checkpoints was also highlighted.

Both governments committed to holding further working group meetings involving relevant authorities in the near future.

The decisions made align with the leaderships’ shared vision of transforming the Uzbek-Kyrgyz state border into one of friendship, good neighborliness, peace, and cooperation.

The meeting concluded in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.
