Uzbekistan Airports, Allied Biofuels Partner on SAF Project
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 8 May, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan Airports and Allied Biofuels signed a memorandum of understanding providing for cooperation in the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and e-synthetic aviation fuel (e-SAF) in Uzbekistan.
Under the agreement, the parties intend to begin supplies of environmentally friendly aviation fuel by 2030.
The signing is seen as an important step in the development of sustainable aviation and in strengthening Uzbekistan’s position as an emerging regional hub for green energy and low-carbon transport infrastructure.
The project aligns with international efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector and aims to promote environmentally safe technologies in air transport across Central Asia.
As part of the cooperation, Allied Biofuels will implement a large-scale project in Uzbekistan to establish an integrated biofuel complex for the industrial production of SAF, e-SAF, and green diesel. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce around 160,400 tons of SAF annually, 257,000 tons of e-SAF, and more than 5,000 tons of green diesel.
The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately US$6.1 billion. The complex is expected to become one of the largest green energy infrastructure initiatives in the region. Its energy supply will be based on renewable energy sources with a total capacity of 4.45 GW and an energy storage system with a capacity of 1,600 MWh.
Green hydrogen production will be carried out using electrolyzers with a total capacity of 2.4 GW. Plug Power has been selected as the preferred supplier of electrolysis technology.
The project is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Investment Promotion Agency.
Chairman of the Uzbekistan Airports Board Javlonbek Umarxodjaev said the memorandum reflects the country’s commitment to modernizing its aviation sector and introducing sustainable fuel solutions.
Allied Biofuels CEO Alfred Benedict said the cooperation will mark an important milestone in the development of environmentally sustainable aviation and the promotion of advanced air transport technologies in the region.
The project is expected to contribute to attracting investment, developing the sustainable aviation fuel market, introducing innovative technologies, and supporting international goals to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry.
