Child Dies After Electric Shock at Transformer in Namangan Region, Investigation Underway

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A 13-year-old boy has died in Namangan region after suffering an electric shock on a high-voltage transformer, according to local media reports and the Commissioner of the Oliy Majlis for Children’s Rights.

Child Ombudsman Surayo Rakhmonova stated that a prosecutorial investigation into the incident is currently underway.

She noted that similar tragedies involving high-voltage electrical installations have become more frequent in the country.

In her statement, the ombudsman emphasized that responsible authorities are obliged to ensure continuous safety in the installation and operation of high-risk electrical equipment, especially in areas accessible to children. To prevent such incidents, she has issued a request to the relevant state body to strengthen compliance monitoring of safety standards.

According to the “Millar” program, the incident occurred in the evening of 5 May in Davlatabad district. It is reported that the boy climbed the transformer, allegedly to pick cherries.

Relatives said the child was under the care of his aunt, while his mother was working abroad. The aunt stated that the boy returned from school at around 17:30 and later went out to play with friends. She also reported that a flash and explosion occurred at the scene.

Witnesses attempted to provide first aid before medical teams arrived. The victim was taken to hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.

Family members claim the transformer was not fenced off. They also said previous complaints to local services and community authorities regarding the hazardous site did not lead to any action.

The General Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that a preliminary investigation is underway. A separate internal inquiry has also been launched into employees of the district electricity supply enterprise to determine all circumstances surrounding the incident.
