Uzbekistan Strengthens Protection of Ugam River Ecosystem
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan has introduced new measures to strengthen the protection of the natural hydrological regime and biological diversity of the Ugam River.
A corresponding presidential decree grants the river the status of a state hydrological natural monument and introduces a series of strict restrictions on economic activity within its basin.
According to the document, starting from June 1, 2026, all construction, earthworks, and the erection of artificial structures that may negatively affect the natural hydrological system and ecological balance of the region will be completely prohibited in the river’s coastal areas and water protection zones. The restrictions are aimed at preserving the river’s natural state and preventing anthropogenic impact.
It is separately emphasized that the construction of hydraulic, land reclamation, hydropower, water regulation, and diversion infrastructure is prohibited within the Ugam River basin and its tributaries.
An exception is made only for the reconstruction of existing hydropower facilities.
The document also bans the allocation of land plots for construction within the territory of the new state hydrological natural monument. This establishes a strict protection regime aimed at preventing further development and degradation of the ecosystem.
As part of the implementation of the decree, a government commission has been established to assess the environmental impact of facilities located in coastal and water protection zones of the river.
The commission will evaluate the compliance of existing and planned facilities with environmental requirements and determine measures to preserve the ecological balance of the region.
