Uzbekistan Stops Illegal Jewelry Smuggling Attempts
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Customs authorities in Uzbekistan’s Bukhara region have foiled two attempts to illegally import jewelry through the border checkpoints “Olot” and “Bukhara Airport.”
In the first case, a passenger arriving at the “Olot” customs post on the Turkmenistan–Uzbekistan border was selected for routine inspection. His behavior raised suspicion among officers, prompting a thorough search using modern scanning equipment and X-ray systems. As a result, officials discovered that the individual had attempted to conceal jewelry weighing a total of 310 grams.
In the second case, another passenger arriving on a flight from Turkey to Bukhara was inspected at the “Bukhara Airport” customs post. Jewelry weighing 108.3 grams was found in his luggage, exceeding the permitted duty-free import limits.
In both incidents, the seized jewelry, with a total estimated value exceeding 501 million soums, was confiscated and placed under temporary storage.
Customs authorities are currently conducting preliminary investigative checks to establish all circumstances surrounding the cases.
