Uzbekistan Temir Yollari state joint stock railway company and Public Works of Ministry of Afghanistan signed a corresponding agreement.
According to the agreement, Uzbekistan Temir Yollari will be main operator of Hairatan to Mazar-e-Sharif railroad and carry out commercial exploitation.
The railway links Hairatan station at the Uzbek-Afghan border with airport of Mazar-e-Sharif. The second line from east of the country to Heart is under construction now.
It is expected that the cargo and goods will be transported through the railway, but in future it is planned to carry out passenger transportation as well.
Construction of 75-km railway with the cost of US$129 million was completed in February 2011. It is expected that some 9 million tonnes of freight will be transported through this railroad.
