Uzbekistan moved up 6 positions in the UNIDO ranking in 2017-2020

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Experts from the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies (IMRI) analyzed the development indicators of the manufacturing industry in 2017-2022 and Uzbekistan’s place in the UNIDO ranking.

The rating of countries by the level of industrial competitiveness is developed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with a delay of two years (i.e. the last report was published in 2022 based on the results of 2020).

The rating is based on a composite index of industrial competitiveness, which is calculated using several key indicators of the development of the manufacturing industry. For this, official statistics for the country under study are used.

These indicators reflect such factors of competitiveness as the ability to produce and export manufactured products, the level of development of high-tech industries, and the country’s place in the global manufacturing industry.

Uzbekistan in the period 2017-2020 moved up in the UNIDO rankings from 95th to 89th place, or 6 positions up, which is a notable achievement. In addition, Uzbekistan ranks second after Kazakhstan in the Industrial Competitiveness Index among Central Asian countries. These achievements have been facilitated by the accelerated development and modernization of the manufacturing industry in recent years.

For certain key indicators included in the industrial competitiveness index, Uzbekistan has achieved the following positive changes:

A trend was noted for a steady increase in the share of the manufacturing industry in GDP from 15.5% in 2017 to 20.5% in 2022.

The production of this sphere per capita steadily increased - by an average of 4.7% annually.

Uzbekistan is gaining momentum in strengthening the competitiveness of products on a global scale. Every year, the demand in the world market for domestic industrial products is growing and the geography of exports is expanding. Thanks to this, the share of manufacturing products in the export of goods increased from 76.6% to 83.3%.

Due to the accelerated growth in exports of pharmaceuticals, various medical equipment and accessories, as well as parts for high-tech industries, the share of high-tech products in exports of manufactured goods increased from 0.16% to 0.49%.
