Uzbekistan 13/07/2009 UN to assist Central Asia to solve water-energy disputes

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The United Nations will help Central Asian states to solve water-energy disputes, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and the head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Miroslav Jenca said.

MIR, the CIS TV Channel, reported that currently some states of the region experience shortage of drink and spray water. Tajikistan and Kyrgyz Republic plant to build large hydro power stations at Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers.

Uzbekistan expressed its concern over these projects as they can further damage ecologic situation in the Central Asian. The report said that the issue will be discussed in "the highest interstate level". Nearest meeting on the problem will be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in October.
