Uzbekistan 07/07/2008 Pakistan and Uzbekistan to boost defence cooperation
Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Tariq Majid, who is currently on four-day visit of Republic of Uzbekistan, called on Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Prime Minister of Uzbekistan and exchanged views on matters of bilateral cooperation and other areas of specific interest, the statement said.

Uzbek Premier expressed hope that visit by Pakistan’s senior military leadership will pave the way for further strengthening military to military relationship between both the countries. Uzbekistan appreciates Pakistan’s efforts in fighting extremism/terrorism and is interested in benefiting from the experiences of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, he added.

The meeting also stressed the need for increasing cooperation in the areas of defence production. General Tariq said that Pakistan values its brotherly ties with Uzbekistan as we are facing common challenges and share similarity of views on security and stability in the region.

"Our relations are based on mutual respect and trust. We need to adopt a collaborative and integrated approach to bring peace and stability to the region", he added. Earlier, in the day, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee called on Ruslan Mirzayev, Defence Minister of Uzbekistan at Ministry of Defence.

The meeting with the Uzbek Defence Minister reflected the warmth and friendship between Pakistan and Uzbekistan. It dwelt upon enhancing mutual cooperation between the two brotherly countries, which shared a common view on international and regional issues.

The main focus of the discussion was aimed at measures for enhancing defence industry and military to military cooperation amongst the two brotherly countries. Later, both sides signed an agreement on military training and measures to enhance military to military cooperation including exchange of expert delegations from both sides to identify specific areas of cooperation.
