Baysun oil spill compensation exceeds 8.5 billion soums
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Baysun district of Surkhandarya region, an environmental incident involving a leak of oil-containing liquid has been recorded, resulting in compensation exceeding 8.5 billion soums.
It was previously reported that petroleum products had entered a river in the area. The situation was brought under control by the State Inspectorate for Environmental Control (Ecological Police) under the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change.
During the inspection, it was established that a discharge of liquid containing petroleum products occurred at one of the wells belonging to the joint venture Surxan Gas Chemical Operating Company.
To prevent further spread of contamination, the company together with contractor Eriell Oilfield Services Middle East DMCC carried out engineering measures, including the excavation and construction of 11 trenches.
Later, on April 23, following heavy rainfall in Baysun district, approximately 1.2 tons of contaminated liquid entered the Khongaronsoy canal.
Based on Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 202 dated April 12, 2021, the environmental damage compensation was calculated at more than 8.5 billion soums.
Environmental authorities reported that the consequences of the incident have now been eliminated and the water has been cleared of oil-based contaminants.
However, the investigation is ongoing. Upon completion of all procedures, materials will be submitted to law enforcement agencies for legal assessment of the incident.
