An exchange of views takes place on new approaches, ideas and initiatives to achieve gender equality in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 4 October, the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on Women and Gender Equality, together with the UN Office in Uzbekistan and its specialized structures, held a Dialogue on the Sustainable Development Goals on gender equality issues in Uzbekistan.

The event was attended by members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, employees of the UN mission in Uzbekistan and its specialized structures, representatives of ministries and departments, international financial institutions, the private sector, youth and civil society institutions, as well as the media.

During the dialogue, an exchange of views took place on the reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan to ensure gender equality, strengthen the family, empower women, and support their employment.

It was noted that currently the share of women in medicine is 77%, in education - 74%, in economics and industry - 46%, and in leadership positions the share of women has reached 33%, in political parties - 47%.

The event paid attention to the adopted new law aimed at reliable protection of the rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of women and children, as well as the establishment of administrative and criminal liability for offenses such as family (domestic) violence, harassment, harassment.

In addition, the participants spoke in detail about the fact that over the past six years, over 40 laws have been adopted aimed at ensuring gender equality, empowering women, protecting them from oppression and violence, strengthening the institution of the family, including emphasizing the importance of the Strategy for Achieving Gender equality in Uzbekistan until 2030, implementation of the National Program and Action Plan.

It was especially emphasized that the ongoing reforms were highly appreciated by a number of international rating agencies. In particular, in the Open Data Watch Open Gender Data Index, Uzbekistan scored 69.7 points and entered the top 20, ranking 18th among 195 countries.

As a result of the event, participants developed proposals and recommendations on new approaches, ideas and initiatives to achieve gender equality in Uzbekistan.
