Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — An event dedicated to World Soil Day was held in Tashkent, where participants discussed the importance of preserving soil resources, emphasizing that soil is the foundation for food production and plays a key role in ecosystems.
The event highlighted that soil degradation, including salinization (with over 833 million hectares of salinized land worldwide), poses a serious threat to food security.
Around 90 people participated in the event, including professors, researchers, specialists, and students, as part of FAO projects.
Discussions focused on sustainable soil and water resource management, methods to combat erosion and soil degradation, and the preservation of a neutral land degradation balance.
Experts emphasized the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, such as minimal soil disturbance, crop rotation, the use of organic fertilizers, and cover crops, to improve soil health and increase its resilience to extreme weather events.
