World media reports on final debates of US presidential candidates

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 22 October, the US President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden held the second final debate in Nashville, Tennessee, where they presented their final arguments to voters.

The 90-minute debate was divided into 6 15-minute segments.

Although traditionally the final presidential debate is entirely devoted to foreign policy, the topics of the last meeting were: 1) the fight against COVID-19; 2) health problems; 3) economics; 4) racial discrimination and migration; 5) climate change; 6) foreign policy.

The incumbent, who is lagging behind his rival in polls, defended his decisions in countering the coronavirus pandemic in the debate. Responding to the criticism of Joe Biden that he calls for the opening of business and schools, Donald Trump said that "people cannot lock themselves in the basement, as Joe did", since they need to work and they have no "incomprehensible income" like Joe Biden.

Speaking about the economy, the President warned that the priorities of the Democrats will hinder its development and this will lead the country to a depression that has never been seen before.

Donald Trump several times in the course of the debate referred to the recently published information on foreign business activity in Ukraine and China, the son of former Vice President Hunter Biden.

Joe Biden, in turn, criticized the actions of Donald Trump in the fight against the pandemic that killed more than 220,000 Americans, noting that "the one who is responsible for such a number of deaths should not remain president." He called the accusations against his son "fiction."

On the issue of climate change, Joe Biden accused the president of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and called for the creation of new environmentally friendly industries. Regarding foreign policy and responding to accusations of "friendly relations" with the "thug" leader of North Korea, Donald Trump noted that good relations with Kim are better than a nuclear war, which could unfold if he followed the Obama-Biden policy.

Dwelling on the issue of racial discrimination, Donald Trump accused Joe Biden of mass detentions of "young black men" and said that he was "the least racist in this room." To which the Democratic candidate called the president "a racist who adds fuel to any racial confrontation."

Political observers of the world media summarize the debate, noting the peculiarities in the actions of the candidates.

Thus, Fox News characterizes the meeting as a good debate with two opposing views.

The Globe and Mail of Canada adheres to the same opinion, noting that "American voters got what seemed impossible - a consistent and sometimes meaningful presidential debate."

At the same time, The Guardian notes that Donald Trump had absolutely nothing to say. According to the publication, he does not have an agenda and a clear plan, as well as ideals, hopes and goals. As the authors of the publication emphasize, "all he has is the pursuit of power for his own benefit."

Speaking about the behavior of candidates, The Washington Times notes that Trump managed to restrain his chaotic behavior and proved himself to be a real president. The Associated Press also draws attention to the unusual behavior of Donald Trump during the debates.

At the same time, Fox News described the president’s speech as "the best debate" in which Donald Trump was most effective when he asked why Joe Biden did not do all those grandiose things that he promises as vice president.

The Associated Press also draws on the fact that Donald Trump returned to the tactics that, in his opinion, brought him to the Oval Office four years ago - personal attacks on his opponent.

In addition, as noted by the ITV broadcasting agency, Donald Trump is returning to the image of an "enemy of the establishment" and during the debates sought to portray himself as an "atypical politician", trying to appear more sincere than his opponent. He several times accused Joe Biden of "typically political" behavior.

Another line of attack for Donald Trump, according to Bloomberg observers, is the emphasis on the fact that the former vice president has accomplished little "in 47 years of political life."

In turn, talking about the behavior of candidates, Fox News notes that Joe Biden at times hesitated, expressing his point of view. Commentators from The Globe and Mail also confirm that Joe Biden sometimes "speaks" and stops, voicing a prepared text.

Political observers of the world media summarize the debate, noting the peculiarities in the actions of the candidates.

Against this background, commentators of the conservative media give the victory in the debate to Donald Trump, while CNN and The New Yorker gave the victory in the debate to Joe Biden.

According to a CNN poll published shortly after the debate ended, 53% of viewers give the debate victory to Joe Biden, compared to 39% for Donald Trump.

However, experts warn against drawing conclusions based on this data. Thus, Donald Trump lost all polls in 2016 based on the results of the debates with H. Clinton, then the rate of her victory in September 2016 was 35%. At the same time, in the current election campaign, Joe Biden’s advantage over Donald Trump by 14% is much less than that of Hilary  Clinton.

Nonetheless, The Guardian observers note that the latest debate took place at a troubling time for Trump when national polls give Joe Biden a steady clear advantage of 8.5%.

In this regard, commentators are mostly of the opinion that these debates will not decisively influence the outcome of the upcoming elections.

The Globe and Mail points out that there was little new information in the debate that could affect the voters’ perception of candidates. In this regard, it is now unlikely to expect significant changes in favor of D. Trump or J. Biden.

Overall, observers point out that historically, final debates rarely influence the course of a campaign, and earlier debates are more important than later ones.

In this vein, Donald Trump was unable to dramatically improve his position before the elections. Based on this, some experts believe that if Donald Trump spoke at the first debate in September 2020 more productively, he would be in a better position than now, with 12 days left before the elections and 47 million Americans have already voted ahead of time.
