WHO warns of global aggravation of COVID-19

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a worsening epidemic situation in the world and a possible exacerbation of the coronavirus pandemic on a global scale. This was announced on Monday during an online briefing by the Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

According to Ghebreyesus, as of Monday, on 8 June, almost 7 million cases of infection have been registered in the world. About 400 thousand people who were treated with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 died.

“The situation with coronavirus in Europe is gradually improving, less and less cases of infection are recorded every day, and most infected patients are recovering. However, the global situation on the planet is deteriorating and leaves much to be desired,” said Ghebreyesus.

According to him, over nine of the last ten days, the number of new cases exceeded 100 thousand people per day, while on Sunday more than 136 thousand cases were recorded - a record for one day.

“Almost 75% of yesterday’s cases are in 10 countries, mainly in America and South Asia,” the WHO Director General said. A growing number of coronavirus infections are still being reported in most countries in Africa, he added.

“We are also seeing an increase in the number of cases in parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. For countries where the epidemiological situation is improving, complacency is the main enemy, the head of WHO warned.

"The results of studies conducted to determine how much of the population has been exposed to the virus show that most people in the world are still susceptible to infection," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“We continue to call for active surveillance to ensure that the virus does not recover, especially since all kinds of mass gatherings are resuming in some countries,” he said.
