Uzbekistan18/03/2008WHO designates Turkmenistan as priority country in elimination of malaria
Turkmenistan, having responded to the call by the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat this disease, has joined the Euro WHO strategic plan "From Malaria Control to Elimination by 2015" following the Tashkent Declaration "The Move from Malaria Control to Elimination," the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru was told in the health ministry of Turkmenistan. Thereby, WHO has designated Turkmenistan as a priority country in elimination of malaria by 2010.
According to the ministry, the enforcement of close epidemiological control, appropriate planning of activities using ecology friendly biological methods of combating the disease carriers, close collaboration with major international organizations as well as raising sanitary awareness among the population have made it possible to reduce to zero the spread of this serious infectious disease. In particular, no single case of malaria was registered in Turkmenistan in 2006-2007.
In accordance with the National Strategic Plan, it is expected that Turkmenistan will take measures to eliminate malaria in the whole country, and first of all in the border areas to prevent malarial transmission from outside, Turkmenistan.ru reported.
