Volkswagen to Produce Seven Models in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan will begin serial production of vehicles in partnership with German automaker Volkswagen this year, with output covering seven models and a phased rollout that will start in Tashkent and later expand to a new plant in the Angren Industrial Zone, according to officials.

The announcement was made by Ulugbek Rozikulov, Chairman of the Board of Uzavtosanoat, in an interview with the O'zbekiston 24 television channel. He spoke after President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed presentations on two key areas: the progress of the joint Volkswagen project and the implementation of presidential directives in the automotive sector for the first quarter of 2026.

Rozikulov said cooperation with Volkswagen has been underway for years but has now reached a fundamentally new stage. The first phase will involve organizing production in Tashkent, while the second phase envisions construction of a modern large-scale manufacturing facility in the Angren industrial zone. He did not specify the timeline for the second phase.

He noted that Volkswagen is the world’s second-largest automaker by sales volume and leads in key financial indicators, while also investing more in research and development than any other automotive company globally. “This means production processes will be aligned with modern scientific standards,” he said.

Vehicles produced in Uzbekistan will serve not only the domestic market but will also be exported to CIS countries, Central Asia and the Caucasus, significantly increasing the country’s export potential.

The project is aligned with a national target set by Mirziyoyev to reach annual production of one million vehicles by 2030. Rozikulov expressed confidence that the launch of joint production with Volkswagen will make a significant contribution to achieving this goal, with GDP contributions and tax revenues expected to begin this year.

Industry performance indicators remain strong. At the beginning of 2026, the automotive sector was tasked with achieving at least 10% growth and producing no fewer than 510,000 vehicles during the year.

According to the head of Uzavtosanoat, sector growth exceeded 11.8% in the first quarter of 2026, with production reaching approximately 108,800 vehicles.

During the same presentation, officials also reviewed investment activity and export performance in the automotive sector and outlined work on developing a long-term industry strategy in addition to current production goals.

A separate focus was placed on regulating the spare parts and components market. According to Uzavtosanoat leadership, improving order in this segment is expected to directly increase total production volumes and improve overall industry profitability.

Work is also underway on the implementation of the “transport-info” digital platform, designed to optimize supply chains and reduce delivery times for end consumers. Rozikulov said additional tools and assets are being considered to accelerate this process.

The industry’s research center is currently working across eight directions related to artificial intelligence and production digitalization, with full integration into state electronic systems identified as a key outcome of this effort.
