Uzpharmcontrol refutes claims about poor quality of Ceftriaxone

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Center for Pharmaceutical Safety (Uzpharmcontrol) has refuted claims that the drug "Ceftriaxone" poses a risk due to poor quality.

Recently, social media spread information that a patient experienced problems after receiving an injection of "Ceftriaxone" purchased at a pharmacy.

According to the Center, a citizen, A.K., residing in Yashnabad district of Tashkent, after experiencing fever and general malaise for three days, self-administered an injection of a mixture of "Ceftriaxone" and "Lidocaine" into the muscle without medical advice, assisted by his mother. About 10 minutes later, symptoms such as body chills, severe malaise, difficulty breathing, and elevated blood pressure appeared.

The patient was then transported by ambulance first to City Clinical Hospital No. 4 named after I. Ergashov and later to City Clinical Hospital No. 1 named after Ibn Sina for specialized care. Treatment measures were taken according to medical standards.

After treatment, symptoms such as rashes, fever, and malaise were resolved, and the patient’s condition improved. The patient was subsequently discharged home.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the adverse reaction observed in the patient was not related to the quality of the drug.

The drug is registered in Uzbekistan in accordance with legal requirements and certified after laboratory testing for medical use. However, samples of the drugs used by the patient are currently undergoing re-evaluation in the Center’s laboratories.

The Center emphasized that "Ceftriaxone" is a third-generation antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity and is used to treat bacterial infections. However, it is ineffective against colds, flu, and other viral infections. This medication is prescribed by a doctor and should be used under medical supervision. Self-administration at home is strictly inadvisable, according to the Center.
