Economy 02/10/2007 Uzbekistan’s UzDaewooAuto car output up 28.1% in Jan-Aug

Uzbek automaker UzDaewooAuto produced 112,718 cars in January-August, up 28.1% on the year, Prime-Tass reporting quoting Uzbekistan’s State Statistics Committee.

UzDaewooAuto produced 55,788 Nexia models, up 16.5% on the year, 41,659 Matiz subcompact cars, up 37.2%, 13,550 Damas minivans, up 39.9%, and 1,721 Lacetti cars, up from about 85 a year ago.

The company aims to make 180,000 vehicles this year, 29% more than in 2006, according to earlier reports.

In 2008, the company intends to reach its planned capacity of 200,000 cars.

UzDaewooAuto was set up on a parity basis by state-owned Uzbek automaker Uzavtoprom and South Korean automaker Daewoo Motor. The plant was launched in 1996. In May 2005, Uzavtoprom bought Daewoo’s stake for U.S. $110 million. In October 2005, UzDaewooAuto extended a component supply agreement with General Motors until 2010.
