Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health: No unknown dangerous viruses detected

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  No unknown dangerous viruses have been reported in Uzbekistan, according to Nurmat Atabekov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service.

Responding to social media rumors about a dangerous virus spreading in Tashkent, allegedly affecting children and causing pneumonia, Atabekov clarified that respiratory illnesses transmitted via airborne droplets are seasonal in nature. Their prevalence typically increases in autumn and winter, but there is no need for panic.

Atabekov also noted that the recent sharp drop in temperatures in Uzbekistan might have reduced indoor air circulation, which can lead to higher virus concentrations. He explained that acute respiratory illnesses usually present symptoms such as nasal itching, runny nose, throat irritation, sore throat, dry cough, and loss of smell.

He emphasized that influenza viruses, parainfluenza, rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, and coronaviruses are the common culprits behind such illnesses. Addressing concerns about new viruses, Atabekov highlighted that while approximately 45,000 coronavirus mutations have been identified globally, only 10-15 have caused illnesses, and the emergence of new mutations is an ongoing process.

Atabekov assured the public that Uzbekistan has a monitoring system in place to track circulating viruses, and no new dangerous viruses have been detected. The majority of identified illnesses are seasonal respiratory infections.

To prevent the spread of diseases, he advised those who are ill to limit outings to public places, avoid close contact, maintain social distancing, and wear medical masks, particularly when caring for sick individuals.
