Uzbekistan-US Business Forum discuss development of relations
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An Uzbekistan-US Business Forum was held in Tashkent on 18 February 2010. The forum was organized within the visit of interagency delegation led by the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake.

The delegation of US businesses arrived in Uzbekistan to participate at the forum. Among them were representatives of General Electric Energy, Sikorsky Aircraft, Boeing, ExxonMobil, Honeywell, Zeppelin International, Case New Holland and others.

During the forum, Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade Galina Saidova said cooperation between Uzbekistan and the US was developing in all areas.

The US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake said that the US highly rates relations with Uzbekistan. He said: “Uzbekistan is rich in natural resources and has shown promise in developing its own technological capabilities within the manufacturing sector. Uzbekistan continues to experience impressive growth of approximately 8 percent per year – a growth rate that has held throughout the economic downturn.”

Blake noted that the US is for further developing of cooperation with Uzbekistan in education sector. He said Uzbekistan plays a critical role in international efforts to confront violent extremists in Afghanistan through its economic activities and cooperation with Afghanistan. Uzbekistan supplies much-needed electricity to Kabul. It supports infrastructure projects in Afghanistan, including the construction of a critical rail line from Hairaton to Mazar-e-Sharif. And finally, Uzbekistan plays a critical role in the transport of non-lethal supplies via the Northern Distribution Network (NDN) into Afghanistan. The NDN has the potential to improve transportation infrastructure and stimulate trade routes connecting Central Asia to the growing markets of South Asia. These efforts will have lasting economic benefits for the region, the US diplomat stated.

During the event, the sides discussed issues on expanding mutual trade, increasing number of joint ventures and implementing joint projects in Navoi free industrial zone.

In 2010, the trade turnover between the two countries made up US$181 million. About 243 joint ventures with the American capital are operating in Uzbekistan. About 63 US companies opened their offices in Uzbekistan They work in such sectors as automobile, petrochemical, textile, food industry, construction materials, tourism, trade, services and others.
