Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 12 February, the Government of Uzbekistan and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Uzbekistan signed the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) for the period of 2010–2015.

CPAP is a result-oriented action plan that provides detailed information on the proposed programme for 2010-2015, the results the programme aims to achieve and the strategies that will help to achieve them.

UNFPA Country programme action plan for Uzbekistan is built around three major components – reproductive health and rights, population and development, and ensuring full implementation of women and men’s rights, opportunities and responsibilities.

The document is designed to address the issues seen as priorities by the Government and civil society, and will ultimately contribute in achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the country.

"This Country Programme Action Plan we sign with UNFPA today, will focus on many important issues and will serve us in implementing State programmes on improving population reproductive health and upbringing harmoniously developed new generation," said Adham Ikramov, Minister of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

During the ceremony UNFPA was assured once again that the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan will undertake every effort for smooth implementation of the new Country programme and will ensure effective participation of all relevant ministries and institutions in making it a success.

During the new programme cycle, UNFPA will assist the Government of Uzbekistan in improving maternal health, strengthening contraceptives logistics and management system, expanding access of youth to information on reproductive health and STI/HIV prevention, ensuring effective monitoring of MDG targets, strengthening national capacity in demography and statistics as well as ensuring full implementation of women and men’s rights.

"Usual timeframe for CPAP implementation is five years, but this time, UN team in Uzbekistan, along with some other UN country teams around the globe, designed a six-year document to synchronise it with the 2015 deadline for achieving MDGs," commented Nuzhat Ehsan, UNFPA Representative a.i. in Uzbekistan.

"We are very pleased to note that the process of preparation of this important document was facilitated in a good spirit of One UN, under overall coordination of the Government with participation of all national and international partners, to ensure we take into account every opinion on each matter we address through our programme," she added.
