Uzbekistan to purchase Hyundai Rotem electric trains for US$195.7 million.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The cost of the contract for the supply of electric trains by Hyundai Rotem to Uzbekistan is US$195.7 million, the South Korean Yonhap agency reported.

Uzbekistan Temir Yollari JSC entered into an agreement for the purchase of electric trains with Hyundai Rotem. The agreement was signed as part of the visit of the President of the Republic of Korea to Uzbekistan.

The agency noted that Hyundai Rotem will supply six high-speed electric trains to Uzbekistan, the total number of cars of which will be 42. The South Korean company will also provide maintenance and repair services for electric trains.

Yonhap notes that this is the first export of high-speed trains developed using Korean technology in two decades since the introduction of the French-backed KTX train in 2004.

“This deal marks the first export from South Korea of high-speed trains developed using domestic technology,” said South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. “It is expected that this will contribute to the improvement of Uzbekistan’s railway infrastructure and will help expand bilateral cooperation in the railway sector,” he added.

As the Uzbekistan Railways reported, Hyundai Rotem electric trains will be named “Jaloliddin Manguberdi” and will run on the route Tashkent – Urgench – Khiva.
