Uzbekistan to launch high speed railway in September 2011
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan is planning to launch first high-speed railway in Central Asia in September 2011, a Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade of Uzbekistan Elyor Ghaniev said.

High-speed passenger electric trains Talgo-250 will run between Tashkent and Samarkand at the speed 250 km per hour. This will help to decrease travel time by one third. The extension of this railway is 356 km. Now, high speed Registan train spent 3.5 hours to pass this route.

Uzbekistan Elyor Ghaniev added that this route will be continued and expanded to Bukhara and Khiva cities.

Uzbekistan Temir Yollari state joint-stock railway company held negotiations with Spain’s PATENTES TALGO, S.L. and inked contract on purchase of two high-speed passenger trains of Talgo AVE 250 series (Spain) with 18 cars.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution, which approved financing sources of the project on purchase of two high-speed passenger trains of Talgo AVE 250 series (Spain).

The contract sum is 38 million euros. Uzbekistan Temir Yollari will finance 50% cost of contract on purchase of Talgo trains. Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan will issue loan to cover other 50%.

The fund will issue loan through National Bank for Foreign Economic Activity of Uzbekistan (NBU). The loan is issued for 10 years, including two-year grace period. The interest rate set at 2% APR, including 0.25% refinancing margin.
