Economy 29/06/2007 Uzbekistan to increase power supply to Afghanistan

An Afghan delegation led by Afghan Water and Energy Minister Mohammad Esmail Khan had visited Uzbekistan. During the visit, a document on cooperation between the two countries was signed.

On 27 June, as a result of the meetings held between the sides, a protocol on the results of talks held between the heads of the Uzbekenergo (Uzbek energy) state joint-stock company’s board of directors and the Afghan Water and Energy Ministry was signed. This document stipulates that the amount of electricity supplied by Uzbekistan to Afghanistan will be increased up to 300 MW.

In accordance with this, at the first stage of the cooperation, 150 MW of power will be supplied to the neighbouring country by the end of 2008. It is planned to carry out this work by constructing a 500-KV transmission line from the Surkhon substation to the Guzar substation in Uzbekistan.

Currently, Uzbekistan supplies Afghanistan with 70-75 MW of electricity via the Mazar-e Sharif substation.
