Uzbekistan to direct US$8.5bn to development of transport-communication infrastructure
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan is planning to implement projects on increasing transit potential of transport-communication infrastructure for total sum of over US$8.5 billion due to foreign and internal investments.

This was announced at the seminar dedicated to discussing communication sector and access to global markets, which was held at the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan.

Currently, several projects on improving transit potential of transport-communication infrastructure are implemented in Uzbekistan.

Till 2015, it is planned to implement projects for US$8.5 billion in this direction due to own and foreign investments. About US$3.54 billion will be used to construct and reconstruct automobile roads, US$2.2 billion to develop and electrification of railways, US$1 billion – to development of air transport and US$1.8 billion – to telecommunication and engineering-communication.

Today, Uzbekistan has over 20 international transport corridors, of which two are large international automobile roads, which pass through Uzbekistan and pass through Bukhara region (E-40 and E-60), linking Western Europe and Eastern Asia.

Participants of the seminar underlined importance of the initiative of the Uzbek President on creation of transport corridor Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman-Qatar, which will also pass through other Gulf countries.

Currently, Uzbekistan national highway operates in Uzbekistan, which links the country with foreign countries. Its length is 2,755 km. In first years of independence, Uzbekistan has 2-3 transport corridors, while now the country can access global markets through 10 corridors.

Participants underlined that completion of the project on construction and reconstruction of railway road “Baku-Tbilisi-Ahalkalasi-Kars”, which conducted by Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, will created opportunity to export cargos from Uzbekistan railway system through Caucasus countries to Turkish ports and through Marmaray tonnel, construction of which is to be completed soon, to Europe.

It was said that Uzbekistan also exports its products to China through international customs post Horgos in Kazakhstan. Launch of this direction will decrease transport expenses due to decreasing travel distance by 700 km and help to increase exports of Uzbekistan to China.

The participants also considered projects on construction of new roads and railroads, reconstruction of transit roads, electrification of railroads, creation logistic centers, modernization of airports, etc.

In particular, they considered projects on creation of international intermodal logistic center “Navoi”, Angren Logistic Center and Tashkent Logistic Center, which play important role in raising transit potential of Uzbekistan.

Currently, airport in Navoi carry out freight transportation to Milan, Brussels, Shanghai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok, Dhaka, and Istanbul. Soon, flights to Dubai, Moscow and Almaty will be launched.

At the end of the meeting, the participants made proposals and recommendations on further increasing transit potential of Uzbekistan.
