Uzbekistan04/12/2007Uzbekistan tightens control on border with Tajik east
If a few days ago the Uzbek side imposed a ban on the movement of transport through the checkpoint, now the turn of people has come. The residents of the town of Panjakent and the villages situated in the border areas of the Panjakent district cannot visit their relatives living in the neighbouring Uzbek region of Samarqand.
The head of the customs service in Panjakent, Sh. Ismoilova, has said that the Tajik side has over the past six months been asking the Uzbek colleagues to normalize the border crossing procedure for the residents of the neighbouring border districts. However, there has been no answer from them yet.
"We don’t know when a step will be made towards removing this kind of obstacles," the head of the Panjakent customs service said.
