Economy 01/07/2023 Uzbekistan: sweet pepper more than doubled in price in a week
Uzbekistan: sweet pepper more than doubled in price in a week

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Over the past week, wholesale prices for green bell peppers in Uzbekistan have fallen by more than 2 times, and an almost two-fold decrease has been observed in the dynamics of wholesale prices for red bell peppers over the past two weeks. According to market participants, this is due to a sharp increase in the supply of open ground crops, EastFruit analysts say.

According to EastFruit price monitoring, from June 23 to June 30, 2023, the average wholesale price for sweet green peppers decreased from 7,000 to 3,000 soums/kg (from US$0.61 to US$0.26), i.e. 2.3 times. At the same time, current wholesale prices are significantly lower than last year’s levels. As of June 30, 2023, the average wholesale price for these products is 1.7 times lower than on the same date last year and exactly 2 times lower than on the same date in 2021.

A similar sharp weekly price decline was observed around the same time two years earlier in the first week of July 2021. From June 30 to July 7, 2021, the average wholesale price for sweet green peppers fell from 6,000 to 2,000 soums/kg (from US$0.57 to US$0.19), i.e. exactly 3 times.

Over the past two weeks, prices for sweet red peppers have almost halved. From June 16 to June 30, the average wholesale price for these products decreased from 25,000 to 13,000 soums/kg (from US$2.18 to US$1.13), i.e. 1.9 times. It is noteworthy that in this case, too, the price dynamics repeats the behavior in the same period of 2021, from June 16 to June 30 of that year, the average wholesale price for these products decreased from 30,000 to 15,000 soums/kg (from US$2.83 to US$1.42 ), i.e. in exactly 2 times.
