Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 3 October, the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, Aziz Abduhakimov, met with Rebeca Grynspan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
The Minister congratulated Grynspan on the successful holding of the World Conference on Creative Economy and expressed hope for further strengthening cooperation in this area. He noted that the ministry is actively working on issues related to desertification, increasing forest areas, restoring natural resources, waste recycling, and combating climate change.
The preparation of Uzbekistan for participation in the COP29 conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Baku, was also highlighted. Abduhakimov emphasized that this underscores the country’s commitment to addressing climate change issues and sustainable development.
Rebeca Grynspan pointed out the numerous common environmental protection aspects between Uzbekistan and UN structures and stressed the importance of cooperation in this field. She also mentioned the completion of the current Framework Cooperation Program in 2025 and the development of a new program, suggesting active participation by the Ministry in shaping new foundations for cooperation that take environmental priorities into account.
The parties discussed expanding cooperation with UNCTAD, focusing on investment policy, foreign trade, the development of a green economy, and ecotourism. As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached to further strengthen cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
