Uzbekistan Senate Raises Child Safety Concerns in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, Kutbiddin Burkhanov, has submitted a formal inquiry to the khokim of Tashkent city over safety issues identified in the Bektemir district of the capital.

The request followed public appeals from residents and findings of an on-site inspection carried out by a Senate working group.

During monitoring and meetings with the local population, it was established that there are no preschool or general education institutions in the “Nurafshon” mahalla. As a result, children are forced to travel daily to schools located in the neighboring Mirabad district.

Lawmakers expressed particular concern that schoolchildren are required to cross the heavily trafficked Tashkent ring road. The area has neither an underground nor an overpass pedestrian crossing, creating a direct safety risk for children and other pedestrians.

According to the findings, the Tashkent city administration is already working on a project to construct an underground pedestrian crossing linking Porlok Street in the Nurafshon mahalla with Kuyluk ota Street in the Mirabad district. However, the timeline for implementation and funding allocation remains unclear.

The Senate inquiry requests information on whether the project has been included in the 2026 development plan and whether funding has been allocated. It also asks for clarification on measures to be taken if financing is not secured.

The request further emphasizes the need for temporary solutions until construction is completed, including the possible organization of a provisional crossing, installation of traffic lights, or increased traffic police supervision to ensure the safety of residents.
