Economy 16/07/2008 Uzbekistan seeks stronger ties
Uzbekistan, one of the world’s largest cotton producers, intends to sell its crop on Dubai bourse.

The team, led by Deputy Minister of External Economic Relations, Investment and Trade Akmal Kamalov, yesterday met Chairman of Dubai Chamber Abdul Rahman Saif Al Ghurair. They discussed ways to support and diversify economic co-operation between the business communities of both countries.

They also reviewed means of expanding trade exchange, particularly in agriculture sector.

Kamalov said Uzbekistan produces some 10 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables a year and exports two millions tonnes with a value exceeding $100m (Dh367m).

He said there were some 67 Uzbek-UAE companies operating in Dubai.

He said Uzbek airlines can supply UAE markets with fresh agricultural products in three hours as the airlines can operate three flights a week for reasonable prices.

Al Ghurair said the chamber is keen to help members enter new markets, probe diverse investment opportunities and build strategic relations with counterparts all over the world. Dubai’s non-oil trade with Uzbekistan in 2007 amounted to some Dh323.5 million as Uzbekistan occupied the 88th position in the list of Dubai trade partners that year.
