Uzbekistan sail through
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) --A resurgent Uzbekistan thrashed India 5-1 to win the play-off as well as group B of the Women’s Olympic Qualifiers round 1 at the Kamalapur stadium on Wednesday.

Trailing 1-0 in the first half the Central Asian’s overpowered their opponents scoring five goals after the breather. Elena Lagutkina scored a brace initiating the fight back. However, Indian goalie Sita Sharma’s fumbles also helped Uzbekistan to register the big victory.

Indian midfielder Bem Bem Devi curved a left foot free kick into the top of the Uzebekistan net from 20 yards to put India ahead in the 42nd minute but substitute winger Elena restored the parity in the 56th minute and put her team ahead with another strike four minutes later.

Ludmila Karachik saw her feeble shot slip between the hands of Sita in the 72nd minute and the goal destroyed India’s morale. They conceded another two in the 75th and 77th minutes with Feroza Turdiboeva and Makhliyo Sarikova scoring one each for the winners.

Uzbekistan and India drew 1-1 in the last group match taking the fate of the group in the play-off after beating hosts Bangladesh by identical 3-0 margins in the group phase.
