Uzbekistan Prepares to Join the International Metric Convention

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 10 July 2025, the Senate Committee of the Oliy Majlis on International Relations, Foreign Economic Ties, Foreign Investments and Tourism held a preliminary review of the draft law “On the Accession of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the International Metric Convention (Paris, 20 May 1875, as amended in 1907, 1913, and 1921).”

The session brought together senators, representatives of local Councils of People’s Deputies, specialists from the Agency for Technical Regulation, researchers, experts, and media representatives.

As emphasized during the discussion, the purpose of joining the Convention is to establish common and reliable measurement standards, create a unified system for international comparison and mutual recognition of national measurement standards, and strengthen technical cooperation among member states.

The Convention covers key areas of metrological activity, including ensuring the comparability of national and international standards, unifying measurement scales, performing periodic calibrations, and storing international prototypes. It enables member countries to maintain uniformity of measurements in science, manufacturing, and trade.

Senators highlighted that the adoption of this law will give Uzbekistan full membership rights in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), including voting privileges and the ability to nominate national candidates to the Bureau's consultative bodies. It will also provide access to the Bureau’s scientific infrastructure and facilitate the professional development of Uzbek specialists at the international level.

Moreover, Uzbekistan’s accession to the Convention is expected to enhance the country’s export potential, improve its standing in global rankings, remove technical barriers to foreign economic cooperation, and support the country’s integration into the World Trade Organization framework.

Another important benefit will be the ability to receive free calibration services for Uzbek measurement standards in international laboratories on a rotational basis, a privilege afforded to full members of the Bureau.

Following the session, the Committee issued a favorable decision on the proposed draft law.
