Uzbekistan plans to invest US$850m to oil shale processing
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan plans to invest US$850 million to implement two projects on processing of oil shale in 2012-2015.

These two projects were included to the programme on priorities of industrial development of Uzbekistan for 2011-2015, which was approved by the Uzbek President Islam Karimov.

Uzbekneftegaz national holding company is planning to organize production of liquid hydrocarbons from oil shale on the base of Sangruntau field. The cost of the project is US$600 million. The capacity of the project is 1 million tonnes of liquid hydrocarbons.

In 2013-2015, Uzbekneftegaz is planning to realize a project on extracting metals from oil shale on the base of Sangruntau field with the cost of US$250 million. The capacity of the project will be determined soon. The project details are discussed with Japan’s JGS Corporation.

In mid 2010, JGS and Technopian Corporation have signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Uzbek government and Uzbekneftegaz on joint development of oil shale in Uzbekistan.

Within six months, the Japanese companies will be studying geological materials provided by the Uzbek side. After that, the sides will consider establishment of a joint venture to develop oil fields.

The perspective reserves of oil shale in Uzbekistan have been estimated at the volume of 47 billion tonnes.
