Uzbekistan nominates its candidacy for chairmanship of UNWTO European Commission
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Government of Uzbekistan has officially announced its nomination for the chairmanship of the European Commission of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the 2025–2027 term.
This marks the first initiative of its kind in the country’s history, highlighting Uzbekistan’s growing role on the international tourism stage and the high level of trust it enjoys within the global professional community.
The UNWTO European Commission comprises 41 countries from Europe, as well as nations from Central and Western Asia. It plays a key role in shaping and coordinating tourism policy in the region, promoting sustainable tourism development, and strengthening international and interregional cooperation.
The upcoming 71st session of the European Commission will be held on 4–6 June 2025 in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan. The agenda includes elections for the commission’s chair for the next two-year period.
Uzbekistan’s nomination is seen as a recognition of the country’s consistent reforms in the tourism sector, its active efforts to foster regional cooperation, and its contribution to advancing sustainable and inclusive tourism models.
If elected, Uzbekistan plans to launch a series of initiatives aimed at further developing tourism in the region.
Priority areas include establishing Central Asia as a unified tourism destination, developing cross-border routes, digitalizing tourism services, and enhancing regional dialogue within the UNWTO framework.
