Uzbekistan marks Remembrance and Honour Day
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan marked the Day of Remembrance and Honour on 9 May 2011. The events dedicated to the 66th anniversary of victory over fascism were held across the country.

President of Uzbekistan visited Honour Square in Tashkent and put wreath to the monument of Grieving Mother.

Speaking before the visitors, the Uzbek President paid tribute to the people, who died in the war in 1941-1945.

Honour Square was lively today. War and labour veterans, members of governments, ministries and departments, MPs and Senators, military officers and others visited the square.

They laid wreath to the monument of Grieving Mother and paid tribute to those, who gave their lives for peace in the world.

The population number in Uzbekistan made up 6.5 million people, of which 1.433 million participated at the war. Over 450,000 people died in the war.

If to take into account that half of population were children and old people, over 55-60% of able-bodied citizens were mobilized to war.

According to some data, currently 8,000 war veterans and 140,000 people, who served on the home front, are living in Uzbekistan.
