Uzbekistan marks Memory and Honor Day on 9 May .In Uzbekistan at the initiative of President Islam Karimov, 9 May  was declared the Day of Memory and Honor.

People of Uzbekistan, has brought huge contribution to maintenance of victory over fascism in World War II. Courage and feat of millions people, shown on fields of battles and behind a front line, forever will remain in the history of our country, and memory of our people. We will never forget the bravery of the Uzbek people who fought on the front and at home producing food for fighters and evacuees.

Veterans of war and labor, members of the government, military men gathered in the square on Memory.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov laid a wreath to the Monument of Grieving Mother. President has rendered a tribute of memory of thousand compatriots who gave their life in World War II, UzA reported.

President of Uzbekistan honored the memory of compatriots, fallen during World War II.

”Today our nation reveres before the memory of those people, who protected their country and nation, Homeland during the war,”-said Islam Karimov.

We respect our heritage more now and respect our veterans. Those who learn the lessons of history and pay respect to those who died for us will be blessed.

"62 years passed after the victory over fascism in World War II," ,”-said Islam Karimov. "This victory without doubt will remain in world history as a significant event. The Uzbek people made a great contribution to this victory. 1.5m citizens from Uzbekistan fought, and more than 400,000 died in the name of freedom of the motherland and to protect our present peaceful life. We will never forget the pain that this war brought. The heroism of millions of people, both at the front and at home will remain in our history. The world widely celebrates this victory. We should celebrate this date to keep in mind the meaning of the victory and the importance of peace, so that no more will such wars be repeated. At our celebrations we should remind people of the need to remember those who died, and not to leave even one veteran unattended to.

"Speaking about memories and honoring, we pay tribute to those self-confident people who died for the freedom of the motherland and the bright future. We honor those veterans who live among us. We must fulfill our sacred duty before them.

"We should bow to the memory of the fallen and honor the living. This should be an integral part of the life of our youth and the people as a whole.

"We should treasure our motherland and heritage, strengthen peace and stability. To awaken awareness in our people we should ask: Are we worth of our ancestors?

"Speaking of honoring, war veterans and those who worked at home and their families get state pensions. They get free medical service, public transit, use sanatorias, artificial limbs, wheelchairs, compensation for living expenses and other things. Sadly, the numbers of survivors of the war are fewer each year.

The square has many visitors everyday. Each person coming here must think about his sacred trust - to protect the country from evil.
