Uzbekistan-Korea: Symposium on Sustainable Management of Cultural Heritage in Uzbekistan kicks off in Samarkand

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - Today, on 26 November 2021, the Uzbek-Korean symposium on the topic “Sustainable management of cultural heritage in Uzbekistan” began its work at the International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage "Silk Road" in Samarkand.

The organizers were the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Cultural Heritage Agency of Uzbekistan, the Cultural Heritage Administration of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Cultural Heritage Fund.

The symposium is dedicated to the completion of the first stage of the project "Increasing the potential and improving the material and technical base of the museum in Uzbekistan", implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in conjunction with the Republic of Korea.

The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov, Director General of the Bureau for the Promotion of Heritage of the Administration of Cultural Heritage R. Korea Yi Kyung Hoon, Program Manager of the Korean Cultural Heritage Fund Kim Dong Ha and Deputy Director General of ODA for Cultural the legacy of John Bamhwan, heads of museums and galleries in Uzbekistan, as well as leading industry experts.

Within the framework of the first stage of the project on a grant basis in the amount of US$700,000:

- a modern laboratory for the study and restoration of archaeological finds has been created in the State Museum of the History of Culture of Uzbekistan;

- held master classes for specialists in the field and carried out the restoration of 95 exhibits;

- a room in the Afrosiyob Museum was repaired, where wall paintings are exhibited;

Also, within the framework of the program, a modern textbook was developed for specialists in Uzbekistan on the restoration and preservation of museum exhibits and archaeological finds.

Symposium Topics:

-Strategic development of museum conservation in Uzbekistan;

-Excavations and scientific analysis of Afrosiyob’s wall paintings;

- Restoration and management of cultural heritage sites on the territory of the Samarkand region;

-Cooperation between Korea and Uzbekistan for the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage.

Within the framework of the symposium, a presentation of the exhibition "Restoration and Reconstruction of Museum Exhibits and Archaeological Finds", developed jointly with Korean specialists, took place.

At present, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports is completing the approval of the issue of allocating additional technical assistance (about US$255,000) for the supply of special equipment for the X-ray composition and analysis of archaeological finds to the laboratory of the Samarkand State Museum-Reserve, as well as the preparation of phase II of the main project for 2022-2026 (US$3.8 million).
