Uzbekistan increases steel output by 8.5% in January-February
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan’s steel producer, Uzmetkombinat, produced 108,540 metric tonnes of steel in January-February, an increase of 8.5% compared with the same two months of 2008.

Steel roll output by Uzmetkombinat in January-February increased by 54.9% year-on-year to 100,490 tonnes.

Uzmetkombinat uses steel scrap for smelting, supplied by other Central Asian states, and supplies have dwindled lately.

The steel smelter invested US$9.5 million in modernization in 2008, which accounts for the increase in output.

In 2008, the smelter produced 674,300 tonnes of steel, 4.5% more than in 2007, and 643,100 tonnes of steel roll, an increase of 3.8% year-on-year.
