Uzbekistan expands its earthquake early warning system

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The number of monitoring stations in Uzbekistan’s national earthquake early warning system has reached 90, according to Samandar Hikmatullaev, Deputy Head of the Information Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The Ministry, in collaboration with the Republican Center for Seismic Prognostic Monitoring, has integrated eight seismic stations from Kyrgyzstan, as well as one station each from Tajikistan and Afghanistan, into the global network of seismic research institutions.

This expansion has increased the total number of stations connected to the global system to 27.

Within the national system of 90 stations, a mobile application has been developed to provide alerts for strong earthquakes.

Using seismic forecasts, damage assessments have been conducted for over 11,000 multi-story residential buildings and 193,000 individual houses in Tashkent under a scenario of a magnitude 6.3 earthquake with an intensity of 8 points.
