Uzbekistan elected for the first time to ECOSOC

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – Uzbekistan has been elected for the first time to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations for the period from 2025 to 2027.

The elections took place on 7 June 2024, at the UN headquarters in New York, USA.

As a result of the secret ballot, Uzbekistan received 185 votes from UN member states and entered the ECOSOC for the first time.

The Economic and Social Council of the UN is the principal organ coordinating the economic and social activities of the Organization.

The Council consists of 54 members who are elected for a three-year term. Decisions in ECOSOC are made by a simple majority vote, with each member having one vote.

The Council holds several short sessions annually to organize its work, in which representatives of civil society actively participate. Additionally, ECOSOC holds an annual four-week substantive session, which takes place in July, alternately in Geneva and New York.
