The document was adopted for strengthening stimulation of introduction of innovative technologies and scientific-technical developments to process of modernization, technical and technological re-equipment of economy, as well as ensuring reliable protection of rights of intellectual property.

In line with the document, Agency for intellectual property will be created on the base of the State Patent Office of Uzbekistan and the Uzbek Agency for Copyright.

The main tasks and directions of the activity of the newly created agency are ensuring implementation of the single state policy on protection of intellectual property, provide legal protection to inventions, industrial samples, useful models, trademarks and other objects on intellectual property, etc.

The agency will also conduct expertise and state registration of inventions, industrial samples and other objects of intellectual property, assist to introduction of innovation to products, and others.

The agency will also form state fund of patent documents and database of officially registered intellectual property, ensure their safety and create conditions for their effective use.

The agency will also control over adherence to legislation on protection of intellectual property and participate with other authorized state bodies on adopting measures on preventing import and turnover of infringing goods.

The Agency for Intellectual Property will develop international cooperation in protection of intellectual property.

The document said that the Agency for Intellectual Property will be assignee on rights and liabilities of the State Patent Office of Uzbekistan and the Uzbek Agency for copyright.

The agency is also a body, authorized to represent Uzbekistan at World Intellectual Property Organization and other international and regional organizations in the sphere of intellectual property.

The Uzbek President Islam Karimov also exempted the Agency from payment of the state duty on opening cases at courts directed to protection of intellectual property.
