Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis recently reviewed a bill in the first reading titled "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan," developed by deputies based on their legislative initiative rights.
The bill proposes several significant changes, including:
Extending the term of office for chairpersons of citizens’ assemblies from three to five years.
Establishing the procedure for electing chairpersons of citizens’ assemblies for a five-year term to replace those whose terms have expired.
Transferring the authority to conduct elections for chairpersons of citizens’ assemblies from the Senate Council of the Oliy Majlis to the Council of the Jokargy Kenes of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, local councils of people’s deputies in the regions, and Tashkent city.
Transferring the authority for conducting elections from the national commission to regional election support commissions in Karakalpakstan, regions, and Tashkent.
Renaming the councils coordinating the activities of citizens’ self-government bodies to the councils for supporting mahallas in the respective regions.
The adoption of this bill is expected to improve the organization of the work of the chairpersons of citizens’ assemblies and the corresponding election commissions. It will also enhance the responsibility of local councils for the timely conduct of elections and improve the organization of work at the local level.
The bill was approved by the deputies in the third reading.
