Uzbekistan 23/09/2009 Uzbekistan calls for responsible use of water, development of hydro power projects
Uzbekistan Permanent Representative to the UN Murad Askarov
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan Permanent Representative to the UN Murad Askarov speaking at the one of roundtable of the UN Climate Summit said global climate change threatens not only separate states and regions, but challenges to all humanity.

Mr. Askarov said during life of two-three generations, the world came close to threshold of irreversible climate changes. He added one of the consequences of climate change became virtually “death” of Aral Sea and Uzbekistan suffered the most from this catastrophe.

Uzbek envoy recalled the Uzbek President Islam Karimov, who said deficit of water resources, decrease of drinking water quality, land degradation, sharp decrease of bio diversity and glaciers at Pamir and Tien Shan, where the significant part of water flow of Amudarya and Syrdarya are formed, are the main problems of Central Asia.

“Water area of Aral Sea already decreased seven times and the volume of water fell 12 times. Desertification processes speed up at Aral Sea Basin. One large territory, covered with sand and salt sand, called Arakkum joined two large deserts in the region - Kyzylkum and Karakum,” Uzbek Ambassador said.

Murad Askarov said the states should direct their efforts to development of mechanisms on precise forecasting climate change and sustainable water management in agriculture with use of fresh water, first of all for production of foodstuff for effective and adequate response to global climate change.

Uzbek Ambassador said each Central Asian state should responsibly and rationally use water resources, from which depends life and security of each separate state and all regions.

Askarov once again recalled the position of Uzbekistan on construction of hydro power stations in Central Asia. He said Uzbekistan adheres to its position on carrying out mandatory international expertise of hydro power stations under aegis of the UN. He added that independent specialists should be attracted to expertise of such large hydro power stations as Kambarata hydropower station at Narin river, feeding Syrdarya, and Rogun hydropower station at Vahsh river, flowing to Amudarya. He added international specialists should adhere to objectiveness principles and corresponding the UN conventions.
