Uzbekistan and UNDP: New steps in green transport

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 7 October, the Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan Ilkhom Makhkamov met with Akiko Fujii, the UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan.

During the meeting, they discussed the results of the project "Tashkent – Accelerating Investments in Low-Carbon Transport" (TAILEV), aimed at improving the environmental situation in Tashkent through the modernization of public transport.

Akiko Fujii praised Uzbekistan’s efforts to reduce harmful transport emissions, enhance public transportation, and combat climate change.

The role of the ministry in ensuring equal opportunities for women in the transport sector was recognized, highlighting the creation of new jobs and the provision of rights for women to operate large-capacity buses.

As part of the TAILEV project, new electric buses have already been introduced in Tashkent and are currently in service. Some of the electric buses purchased by "Toshshahartranskhizmat" were financed through grants from the Global Environment Facility.

UNDP and the Ministry of Transport plan to jointly implement new projects aimed at developing green transport in Uzbekistan. Cooperation with UNDP allows Uzbekistan to access new technologies, knowledge, and financial resources for the advancement of green transportation.
